Project Milestone: JUWI signs 420,000-panel panel deal with JA Solar

Our team has signed a major solar module agreement with JA Solar for two flagship projects supporting Glencore, Sasol, and Air Liquide.

We’re excited to announce another major step forward on two of JUWI South Africa’s flagship solar PV projects: our team has just signed a major solar module supply deal with JA Solar, a global leader in high-performance PV technology.

Under the agreement, JA Solar will supply around 420,000 panels for the Sonvanger Solar Plant (developed for Glencore) and Paarde Valley PV2 (developed for Sasol and Air Liquide). The two projects are delivered in partnership with leading independent power producers Pele Green Energy and TotalEnergies, Mulilo and Reatile Group, respectively.

Together, the projects will deliver 672,000 MWh of clean, reliable energy each year, reducing about 625,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, or the equivalent of taking more than 130,000 cars off the road. The panels will cover an area roughly the size of 160 rugby fields.

This is what our MD, Richard Doyle, had to say about the news:

We’re proud to work with global technology leaders like JA Solar, energy-intensive industries and independent power producers to advance South Africa’s energy transition.

With the country targeting nearly 30 gigawatts of new wind and solar by 2030, and 11 GW of coal capacity scheduled for decommissioning in the near future, we need to ramp up renewable energy deployment faster than ever before if we’re going to keep the lights on. These large-scale projects also bring real carbon savings to the country’s hard-to-abate sectors, while reducing electricity costs for energy users and easing pressure on the grid.

Aiqing Yang, Executive President at JA Solar added: “We’re proud to partner with JUWI on these flagship projects, which reflect our shared commitment to advancing clean energy in South Africa. By supplying high-efficiency modules built for performance and reliability, we’re helping to power a more sustainable industrial future.”

Earlier this year, we announced we would be starting construction on over R6 billion (USD 320 million) worth of solar PV projects for mining, energy, and data centre leaders, which will eventually add around 5% to South Africa’s total installed solar PV capacity. This latest milestone is a crucial step in that journey, as we move into full-scale construction, with both sites expected to come online by late 2026.

One panel at a time, we’re turning that vision into reality.
