Operations and Maintenance Engineer, Cape Town

Objectives

The purpose of this role is to provide technical support to the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) team in South Africa, aiming at the safe, efficient and reliable of the PV plants and the technical excellence of the O&M function.

 

Primary Responsibilities

The Operations and Maintenance Engineer will report functionally to the O&M Senior Engineer, in South Africa, while the line reporting will be to the Head of Operations and Maintenance-EMEA, based in Wörrstadt, Germany. 

  • Operations and Maintenance Engineering support for juwi PV plants in the South Africa, including:
    • Troubleshooting and planning of corrective actions in cases of complex events
    • Data consolidating and analysing (from remote monitoring systems and event lists), in order to establish trends and suggest pro-active measures
    • Drafting, reviewing and improving procedures and method statements for the preventive and corrective maintenance
    • Liaise between all internal stakeholders (O&M South Africa team, O&M team Wörrstadt, Control Room EMEA, Engineering team, Project Management, etc.)
    • Provide remote (phone, email) as well as on-site support and guidance to site technicians
    • Perform regular audits to all plants
    • Respond to technical questions or requests of juwi customers
    • Liaise with equipment or replacement parts suppliers and service subcontractors, mostly (but not limited to) regarding technical/specification issues
    • Provide technical input and support for audits carried out by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (this relates specifically to PV plants in South Africa)
    • Plan and implement technical improvements in the PV plants
  • Assist the O&M Senior Engineer in maintaining General Machinery Regulatory compliance of PV plants.
  • Support the process of onboarding new PV plants, either juwi built or 3rd party ones, in the existing O&M portfolio.

 

Qualifications, Experience and Personal Attributes

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (BTech, BEng, MEng or similar)
  • Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (Pr.Eng)
  • Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) or has passed the examination on the Operational Health and Safety Act and the relevant regulations or is in process of doing so.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical engineering (heavy current)
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in power utility infrastructure project execution and/or operations and maintenance
  • Good technical understanding of PV plants and Substations
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrable experience of managing Subcontractors, technical personnel, Clients and Utilities to stringent time and quality metrics
  • Conversant with construction, environmental and safety requirements and legislation
  • Conversant with the General Machinery Regulations
  • Conversant with the South African grid code, transmission network code, distribution network code, and the South African National Standards (SANS)
  • Fluent in English

 

Desirable attributes

  • Experience of working within the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme
  • Working experience in the EPC or O&M of PV plants
  • Working experience on Substations
  • Fluent in Afrikaans

 

Other

  • National (up to 25%) and international travel (up to 5%) will be required in line with business requirements

Financial Analyst / Modeller, Cape Town

Objectives

juwi is a market leader in the development of projects and provision of EPC solutions to both REIPP projects and commercial and industrial customers in Southern Africa.  The Financial Analyst plays a key role in the evaluation of the economics of solutions we develop:

  • the margins for the EPC,
  • the tariff under a PPA,
  • the returns for the funder in the cases of project or asset-based financethe LCOE and NPV for the electricity user/off-taker and
  • the interaction between these returns.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in and aptitude for understanding the sensitivities of the models and the relationship between the returns and technical designs and commercial risks.  The role reports into the CFO but also into the Heads of Project and Business Development.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Optimise existing and/or build new financial models to model long-term financial returns from renewable energy projects
  • At least one of the models will be based on Project Finance principles
  • Provide support to the Business and Project Development teams by modelling projects being developed and assisting in optimising the returns for all parties
  • Follow developments in the market for innovative funding models including but not limited to CPI versus JIBAR indexation, rolling facilities, all equity funding, concessionary funding etc.
  • Follow developments in the market for tax treatments, both in South Africa (12J, 12B etc.) as well as in relation to neighbouring countries (withholding taxes) to ensure that all financial models are up to date and accurate.

 

Qualifications, Experience

  • Finance/Financial Analysis/Portfolio Management Degree
  • CA/CFA/B.Com (Hons) or similar financial qualification preferred
  • Proven ability to develop and run Excel-based financial models (including VBA development experience)
  • Experience with REIPP or similar renewable energy modelling
  • Project Finance modelling is a strong advantage
  • Experience in a banking or investment management or corporate financial advisory environment strongly favoured
  • 2 – 5 years’ experience is preferable
