EPC Project Manager, Cape Town

Objectives

The EPC Project Manager will be responsible for project management of large utility scale solar PV and related hybrid EPC projects in South Africa from cradle to grave, including full responsibility for compliance, budget, cost, quality, schedule, risk, contracts, engineering, integration, stakeholders and security.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the successful outcome of solar PV EPC projects from design through energisation and handover
  • Formal project management of EPC and Sub-contracts including technical, commercial and stakeholder aspects
  • Reporting to the Head of EPC PM, the EPC Project Manager will work with Business Development, Project Purchasing, Construction Management, Engineering, Consultants, Clients and Authorities to ensure compliant project execution
  • Manage and report on progress - schedule, costs, risk, quality etc. as and when required by the Company
  • Adopt and improve where necessary the standard juwi project management processes to minimize project risk and maximize performance
  • Responsible for liquidity/ cash flow
  • Responsible for schedule and costs as per EPC contracts and budget
  • Ensure compliance with all the specifications and requirements included in EPC contracts and related project documents
  • Responsible for achieving contractual milestones
  • Implementation, compliance with juwi processes and standards
  • Coordination and cooperation with relevant internal and external interfaces
  • Ensure full compliance with the QHSE regulations, legislation, standards, codes and requirements in South Africa
  • Responsible for handover to O&M, Owner and Utility

Qualifications, Experience and Personal Attributes

  • Engineering/ Management qualification
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience in Electrical infrastructure project management (EPC) with overall responsibility, minimum USD20m project value
  • At least 3 years Solar PV EPC project management
  • Excellent communication skills, able to communicate at all levels both internally and externally (both suppliers and customers)
  • A proven track record in influencing project stakeholders in order to deliver successful projects
  • A proven track record in successfully delivering projects on time, on budget, safely and compliant with technical & quality requirements and standards
  • Experience of working autonomously, as the position requires leadership, decision making and problem solving
  • Conversant with project management tools i.e. MS Project & MS Office, etc. and best practice
  • Demonstrable experience of project cost, schedule, risk, quality and technical management and control
  • A good understanding of the electrical grid, South African National Grid Code and grid connection process
  • Conversant with health and safety requirements, commissioning and energization of substations & Solar PV plants
  • Experience of evaluating processes and making appropriate improvements in line with business needs
  • Acquaintance with PMI standards or alternatively industrial standards (to be proven)
  • Demonstrable experience of contract management and knowledge of standard contract forms – NEC, FIDIC, etc.
  • English: native speaker
  • Demonstrable ability to work in matrix organizations and to operate in a culturally diverse international environment
  • Team player with demonstrable leadership qualities

Desirable attributes

  • Experience of working within the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Program
  • A formal project management qualification
  • Fluent in Afrikaans and/ or German and/ or French
  • Professionally registered Engineer or Project Manager

PV Hybrid Engineer, Cape Town

Objectives

As Engineer for hybrid PV plants you will be part of the juwi EMEA engineering team, supporting the global hybrid business team with electrical engineering analysis, design, modelling, costing and commissioning. You will be responsible for all technical queries related to hybrid renewable energy systems works for all phases of the project life cycle.

Primary Responsibilities

  • System specification, design and lay-out of hybrid PV plants, using tools such as AutoCAD
  • Liaise with sales team / clients to understand requirements and run hybrid system sizing and simulations with tools such as Homer Pro, MATLAB and PVSyst
  • Understand technical requirements from RFP documentation
  • Create BOM and SOW for purchasing team and sub-contractors
  • Complete drafting of technical drawings
  • Technical support for proposal preparation
  • Support component evaluation, specification and selection
  • Review contract technical requirements and prepare requirements tracking mechanism.
  • Ensure compliance with technical requirements and facilitate close out of open issues
  • Implementation of system design standards and optimisations proposed by International system design and construction teams
  • Document control, maintain engineering folder structure and prepare document registers
  • On-site verification of installation & testing in accordance with design, procedures. Regulations, standards and codes
  • Compliance to juwi standards and to regional standards and regulations
  • Ensure seamless technical documentation of Hybrid PV power plants
  • Technical advisory and technical support for Project Development, Project Management, Operation & Maintenance, Sales and Project Finance department

Qualifications, Experience and Personal Attributes

  • Registered as a professional engineer or technologist with the Engineering Counsel of South Africa
  • Engineering qualification, preferably in electrical engineering
  • Five years’ work experience in Power generation industry, especially in the designing hybrid renewable energy systems
  • Experience with multi-MW scale projects is preferred
  • In depth knowledge of state of art battery-based energy storage systems technologies
  • Fundamental understanding of hybrid / microgrid control systems and their integration
  • Knowledge of diesel generators and associated controllers
  • Proven experience in generating hybrid system analysis and proposal content
  • Highly proficient in Homer Pro (or similar software)
  • Ability to grasp customer requirements and translate them into simulation inputs
  • Good command of MATLAB, PVSyst and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of PLC programming platforms (EN 61131) is an advantage
  • Excellent command of MS Office
  • Ability to develop electrical single-line diagrams
  • The candidate should have demonstrated the ability to work in matrix organizations and to operate and navigate within an international company
  • Ability to work independently

Contract Administrator, Cape Town (Fixed Term)

Objectives

The Contract Administrator will be responsible for contract planning and administration of solar PV EPC projects in South Africa. The position is regarded as a skilled contract administration role, focussed on EPC & Subcontract administration. Reporting to the Project Manager(s), the Contract Administrator will support Supply Chain Manager(s), Project Controller(s), Engineer(s) and Construction Manager(s) as directed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Contract planning:

    • Initial  team & stakeholder engagement, supporting document criteria, communication and presentations
    • Establish and maintain the contract folder structure for draft contracts and schedules
    • Track and compare changes and control contract and schedule revisions
    • Style and formatting for clean execution versions for circulation, prepare contracts for signature

  • Contract execution & obligations:

    • Establish and maintain the contract management folder structure relating to executed contracts

    • Day-to-day administration and monitoring of the EPC contract to facilitate compliance with notices, obligations and deliverables required from the juwi project team

    • Day-to-day administration and monitoring of major subcontractor & supplier contracts to facilitate subcontractor compliance with requirements therein

    • Assist in the drafting of approvals, certificates, consents, determinations, notices, requests and compile supporting documentation thereto for the Project Managers review and approval

    • Prepare contracts for signature by:

    • Organise signature by authorised signatory and/or Notary /Apostille requirements

    • Print hardcopies, sort, scan and compile for Project Library

    • Compilation, establishment and tracking of the EPC Contract and associated project documents (IA, PPA, DCUOSA, SBA, EIA, EMP, etc.) Hold Points register (List of Deliverables), as well as other major subcontract & supplier Hold Points

    • Maintain the communication channel procedures established between project key stakeholders (i.e. EPC PM, Client, Engineering, Construction)

    • Establish, populate, track and update the contractual communication registers, as well as maintain the electronic and hardcopy file index system

    • Compile and maintain templates for contractual letters, notifications and other deliverables in accordance with EPC, associate project documents and  Subcontracts

    • Ensure contract deliverables are received by the Client and/ or relevant stakeholders timeously

    • Ensure contract deliverables are obtained by Suppliers & Subcontractors timeously

    • Assist the project administrator in fulfilling the requirements for the compilation of monthly reports, and other approved forms

    • In conjunction with the Quality representative and the Contract Manager, establish and co-ordinate workshops related to contract obligation process descriptions (i.e. Control of Project Communications, Payment, Insurance claim processes)

    • Point of contact to advise and guide juwi project team on contractual implications, approved forms, any actions arising during execution, and escalate to Contract Manager depending on complexity

    • Establish, administer and maintain the insurance claim process and compile  templates as required

Qualifications, Experience and Personal Attributes

  • Contract Management/ Administration qualification
  • Experience of working within a project, engineering and construction environment
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role, at comparable level
  • Fluent in English
  • Demonstrable ability to work in matrix organizations and to operate in a culturally diverse international environment
  • An understanding of the requirements and implications of EPC projects
  • Conversant with contract management and standard/ proprietary contract forms
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, MS Word, Power Point, Excel)

Operations and Maintenance Engineer, Cape Town

Objectives

The purpose of this role is to provide technical support to the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) team in South Africa, aiming at the safe, efficient and reliable of the PV plants and the technical excellence of the O&M function.

Primary Responsibilities

  • The Operations and Maintenance Engineer will report functionally to the O&M Senior Engineer, in South Africa, while the line reporting will be to the Head of Operations and Maintenance-EMEA, based in Wörrstadt, Germany. 
  • Operations and Maintenance Engineering support for juwi PV plants in the South Africa, including:

    • Troubleshooting and planning of corrective actions in cases of complex events
    • Data consolidating and analysing (from remote monitoring systems and event lists), in order to establish trends and suggest pro-active measures
    • Drafting, reviewing and improving procedures and method statements for the preventive and corrective maintenance
    • Liaise between all internal stakeholders (O&M South Africa team, O&M team Wörrstadt, Control Room EMEA, Engineering team, Project Management, etc.)
    • Provide remote (phone, email) as well as on-site support and guidance to site technicians
    • Perform regular audits to all plants
    • Respond to technical questions or requests of juwi customers
    • Liaise with equipment or replacement parts suppliers and service subcontractors, mostly (but not limited to) regarding technical/specification issues
    • Provide technical input and support for audits carried out by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (this relates specifically to PV plants in South Africa)
    • Plan and implement technical improvements in the PV plants

  • Assist the O&M Senior Engineer in maintaining General Machinery Regulatory compliance of PV plants.
  • Support the process of onboarding new PV plants, either juwi built or 3rd party ones, in the existing O&M portfolio.

Qualifications, Experience and Personal Attributes

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (BTech, BEng, MEng or similar)
  • Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (Pr.Eng)
  • Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) or has passed the examination on the Operational Health and Safety Act and the relevant regulations or is in process of doing so.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical engineering (heavy current)
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in power utility infrastructure project execution and/or operations and maintenance
  • Good technical understanding of PV plants and Substations
  • Good communication skills
  • Demonstrable experience of managing Subcontractors, technical personnel, Clients and Utilities to stringent time and quality metrics
  • Conversant with construction, environmental and safety requirements and legislation
  • Conversant with the General Machinery Regulations
  • Conversant with the South African grid code, transmission network code, distribution network code, and the South African National Standards (SANS)
  • Fluent in English

Desirable attributes

  • Experience of working within the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme
  • Working experience in the EPC or O&M of PV plants
  • Working experience on Substations
  • Fluent in Afrikaans

Other

  • National (up to 25%) and international travel (up to 5%) will be required in line with business requirements
